Appalachian Trail thru-hikers stay at the Jeffers Brook Shelter before starting the ascent to Mt. Moosilauke, the first of the 4,000 ft. peaks in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
While visiting the Jeffers Brook Shelter, we met thru-hikers who go by the trail names Wizard and 700. We spent an evening hearing their trail encounters, from lightning storms to the smell of bacon wafting down the mountain. 700 is attempting to complete the Triple Crown, which includes thru-hiking the three major U.S. long-distance trails—the Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Appalachian Trail.
